I cleaned the toilet in my nicest white fancy dress
wearing the kind of expensive sheer stockings that tear when you look at them

yesterday
I told my jobseeker person I wanted to be an artist,
she told me that maybe I could pick painting as an elective at university

On our very first date, we strolled by the river in the dusky silk light
past a fat-faced accordionist, who winked as we passed
and I held out my arms to her awkwardly, like a nerd at the prom
she had blushed then, and whispered into the crook of my neck
that her feet never went where she put them, that dance was no friend to her
I laughed, and showed her my ungainly toes, and swept her up anyway
giddy and hooting and roaring with glee
Our off-tempo shamblings become our solemnest secret
performed in bus queues, at yard sales, on asphalt and snow
We danced our minutiae with unwieldy steps:
The ship that came in while we stood on the dock
and bathed us in foghorning spotlights like prey
The hour that her father and his cancer made peace
we swayed in the fluorescent hospital hum
The aching hot night, when the floor seemed to sweat
and we danced in the kitchen while the pizza piped smoke like a video clip
The morning she left, when our knees kept on knocking
and our elbows were bumping, and our jawbones grew grim

Perceivedly important life questions:

What is the meaning of life? (Ridiculous. That’s akin to asking ‘What is the meaning of tuna?’ The meaning of life is the period between being born and being dead. The meaning of your life, that being the purpose, is to find a goal and set about achieving it, but preferably not achieving it too early (this may include building model airplanes, raising children, climbing several mountains, hanging out with lots of dogs). Running companies is a bad life goal because companies are just imaginary arrangements of people and money. Kissing lots of people is a much better life goal).

Actually important life questions:

Who was the first person to combine tomatoes, mozzarella and basil, and did they win any prizes for this? Whoever decided to put these things on a baked floury base and call it pizza also should have been remunerated, if not decorated.

5’9” and don’t you know it
chest puffed like a peacock
or a rooster
or more like a lion
awkward tan lines
or the person who invented shoulder pads
orrrrr
all the reasons why high ceilings are awesome

He pressed his ear to the stone and heard the crowd roaring
started back in alarm, stared around at the milling tourists
ran his hands over the centuries-stained rock, looking for speakers
wondered if he was being Punk’d
wondered in Punk’d was still on television
stood uncertainly for a moment as the day droned on
pressed his ear to the stone and heard the swords snap together
heard the hot breath of dogs and the rough skid of gravel
heard the moment the flesh gave way and the insides spilled out of a man
reeled back, knees trembling, clutching his ticket
whose steep price seemed suddenly justified

He was the sort of person who always bought the second-best banana in the supermarket pile
He was the sort of person who always gave an offering at churches he visited, even though he didn’t believe in any god
He was the sort of person who held open train carriages with his briefcase at every station, just in case
He was the sort of person who kept the last bite of sausage on his plate to give to a passing dog
He was the sort of person who always volunteered to sit in the emergency exit row on planes
He was the sort of person who fretted terribly over what to give his niece for Christmas
He was the sort of person who walked out of his way to stand in queues until they sorted themselves into elegant lines, then left
He was the sort of person who always wore a pocket handkerchief, in case anyone needed to sneeze
He was the sort of person who filled out forms in the most beautifully legible upper case
He was the sort of person who cried when his cat brought him a pigeon
He was the sort of person who wrote letters to the newspapers, urging for kindness
He was the sort of person who made a wish at every fountain
He was the sort of person who could dance a little, but never had the chance to prove it
He was the sort of person who longed to play the violin, and who would listen to Stravinsky and mime the bow strokes
He was the sort of person who wrote long, heartfelt letters and never sent them
He was the sort of person who ironed his dress pants twice every time
He was the sort of person who preferred strawberry to chocolate, but never said so, for fear of ridicule
He was the sort of person who had a deep, secret affection for shag pile carpet
He was the sort of person who had never quite learned to drive
He was the sort of person who had never played ‘he loves me, he loves me not’ with a daisy because he couldn’t bear to tear apart the flower
